Kinematics Formulas

Kinematics is the branch of physics that considers how an object moves, without regard for what causes this motion. The main concepts are given as follows: displacement or change of position of an object; velocity, which is the rate of change of displacement and acceleration, or the measure of the rate of change of velocity over time. Kinematics therefore poses the framework to understand how objects move, thereby placing calculations of speed, distance, and time squarely within the ability of this domain of knowledge.

Formulas

Kinematic formulas are three to be exact:

At this point,

  • x and xo are Final and Initial displacements stated in m,

  • vo and v are the initial and final velocity stated in m/s,

  •  acceleration is a and stated in m/s ^2

  •  the time taken is t in s.

Kinematics Formulas – 2D

2 dimensional or 2D kinematics equations is all about stating the same equations in x and y directions:

In y-direction the Kinematic formula is stated as:

Kinematics Formulas for Projectile Motion

Imagine a projectile motion as presented in the figure. Thus, the kinematics formulas are:

In x-direction:

Along y-axis,

Kinematics Solved Example

Problem 1: A car with an initial velocity of zero undergoes a uniform acceleration of 7 for the time interval t= 5s. Calculate the distance covered.

Answer:

Given parameters

vo = 0

time t = 5s

acceleration a = 7 m/s2

To find the Distance covered S.

Using the Kinematic Equation one can easily conclude that
