Latent heat is the amount of heat energy required to change the state of a substance without changing its temperature. This energy is absorbed or evolved in the phase changes like melting, freezing, boiling, or condensation.
The latent heat formula is given as,
L = Q / M
Where,
Q = quantity of heat
M = mass of the substance
Problem 1 : Find the latent heat of 5 kg material when the amount of heat for a change of phase is 400 k.cal.
Solution:
Given,
Q = 400 k.cal M = 5 kg
The formula of latent heat is given by,
L = Q / M
L = 400 / 5
L = 80 k.cal/kg
Problem 2: The heat required for a phase change of 2 kg substance is 300k. cal. Find its latent heat.
Solution:
Given,
Q = 300 k. cal
M = 2 kg
The formula for latent heat is given as,
L = Q / M
L = 300 / 2
L = 150 k.cal/kg
