Resultant Force Formula

In physics, knowledge of forces forms an important part of analyzing motion and predicting the behavior of objects under different conditions.It is simply the total force that might be exerted on an object if all the individual forces acting on it were summed together. By Newton's Second Law of Motion, it determines the acceleration and direction of motion of the object. If several forces act on an object, then the resultant force can be used to simplify our analysis by treating it as if only a single force were acting on the object.

Formula of Resultant Force

If one force is acting perpendicular to another, then the resultant force is obtained by using the Pythagoras formula. The Resultant force formula is given by,

Where

F1, F2, and F3 are the three forces acting in the same direction of an object.

Solved Problem

Problem: Find the FR when three forces like 80 N, 100 N and 30 N are acting on an object together and 30 N force opposite to the other two forces.

Solution:

Given,

F1 = 80 N

F2 = 100 N

F3 = -30 N

F3 has a negative value since it is acting against the other two forces

Resultant force formula

  FR = 80 + 100 – 30

  FR = 150 N
