Terminal Velocity Formula

Terminal velocity is the maximum speed which an object makes when moving down in a fluid such as air or water. It occurs after a result of force of gravity pulling the object down has been balanced by the drag force (air resistance) acting upward, and at the moment when acceleration of the object stops to occur and falls continuously with constant speed.

Formula

The formula terminal velocity is given as

Where,

  • g = acceleration due to gravity,

  • h = height from the ground

The terminal velocity acceleration due to gravity or height is used to find the value of one if all other quantities are known.

Terminal velocity is expressed in meter per second (m/s).

Solved Examples

Example 1: A man is at the height of 2000 m from the ground. What would be his terminal velocity?

Solution:

Given:

Height h = 2000 m,

The terminal velocity formula is given by

V= √2×9.8 ×2000

= √39200

= 197.98 m/s.

Example 2:Determine the height of the body if its terminal velocity is 100 m/s.

Solution:

Given:

Terminal velocity ,V= 100 m/s

The height is given by

terminal velocity formula 1

= 10000 / 9.8 x 2

h = 510.204 m.
