Solubility in Organic Solvents: It is also soluble in alcohol and acetone.

Alkaline Nature: When Potassium cyanide is added to water, it forms very alkaline solution:

Cyanidation Process:

In this process, potassium cyanide reacts with gold in the presence of oxygen to form a soluble complex of gold with cyanide, which can be extracted.

Electroplating:

Potassium cyanide has been widely used in metal electroplating, mainly gold, silver, and copper. Ions in cyanide go into making soluble complexes in metal ions. The solutions containing cyanide complexes undergo reduction processes onto a substrate during plating.

Organic Chemistry:

Potassium cyanide is the most common source of cyanide in organic chemistry and has been used to synthesize various chemicals, including nitriles and amino acids. It acts as a nucleophile in various reactions that introduce the cyanide group into organic molecules.

Chemical Analysis

Potassium cyanide could be used as a chemical reagent for detecting certain metals, such as gold, silver, and copper, since it forms well-defined complexes with these elements.

Potassium cyanide was used as a photographic toner in developing photographic film and paper but is no longer commonly applied due to the availability of safer alternatives.

Pest Control

Potassium cyanide has been used for fumigation in agriculture, but due to extreme toxicity, its use is not preferred and has become restricted in favor of using safer pesticides.
