Have you ever imagined a school where there are no classrooms, no friends sitting beside you, and no human teachers? What if your teacher was a machine and your lessons appeared on a screen at home every single day? The Fun They Had by Isaac Asimov takes you on a journey to the year 2157, where this is exactly how children learn. Through Margie and Tommy’s discovery of an old book, you get a glimpse of how schools used to be and how different they might have been.
Isaac Asimov was a famous writer known for his imaginative science fiction stories and ideas about the future. He was born in 1920 and had a deep interest in science, which is reflected in many of his works. Asimov wrote hundreds of books, including stories about robots, space, and futuristic worlds. His writing is simple, engaging, and thought-provoking, making complex ideas easy to understand for readers of all ages. In ‘The Fun They Had’, he explores how technology might change education and reminds us of the importance of human connection in learning.
The story is set in the future 2157. It is an account of how the schools and books will be in the future. The students in future will be deprived of an actual school, instead they will be taught at their homes and there will be mechanical teachers in place of humans.
At the end, we come to know that this is an imagination of a young girl named Margie. She gets to know about the schools that were there in the past where all the students studied together. She senses that all the students had a lot of fun when they went to school. So, when we read the story we feel that school life is fascinating, and that we are fortunate that we have real schools where we go, meet friends and get a chance to study together.
In the year 2157, eleven-year-old Margie makes a diary entry dated 17th May, 2157, titled “Today Tommy found a real book!” The book is old and pages have turned yellow and wrinkled which evidently portrays its existence centuries ago. She comes to know about the book from his grandfather.
Tommy had found the book in the attic of his house. The book, according to her, was strange. It had the same words on it. According to her the book was strange as it had the same words on it every time they read it unlike the way they move on a computer or television screen.
A thirteen-year-old boy Tommy calls it a waste after reading the book once there is no further use and it could be thrown away. Margie also agreed with him. As compared to the book, their television screen has a million books on it and one cannot throw it away. When Tommy told Margie about school she was not interested as she hated school and her mechanical teacher. Her mechanical teacher was large, black ad ugly and had a big screen and had been giving her test after test in Geography and she had been underperforming repeatedly. Margie’s mother sends for the County Inspector who could find out if there was something wrong with the mechanical teacher.
The Inspector fixed the geography sector by slowing down the speed according to the level of a 10 year old child. Besides, he informed that the overall performance of Margie had been quite satisfactory.
After reading the book, Tommy discussed the schools that existed centuries ago. Human teachers used to teach them and gave them homework and also asked them questions. Margie was curious to know about the school but it was the time for both Tommy and Margie to go to their school.
Margie’s mechanical teacher started teaching her arithmetic but she was lost in the thought of old schools and started imagining about the fun kids had at the school in the past.
