What Is Continuous Tense?

The continuous tense is used to refer to actions that are happening over a period of time. It shows that an action is in progress in the present, was ongoing at a specific time in the past, or will be ongoing at a certain time in the future.

In English, there are three main types of continuous tense: the present continuous tense, which describes an action happening right now; the past continuous tense, which describes an action that was happening at a particular time in the past; and the future continuous tense, which describes an action that will be happening at a specific time in the future.

Present Continuous Tense Examples

The present continuous tense is used to describe actions that are happening at the moment of speaking. It can also be used to talk about planned future events. The formula of the present continuous tense is: 

Subject + am/is/are + verb + -ing

Examples: 

• She is reading a novel in the library.

• They are playing football in the playground.

• I am preparing for my final exams.

• The baby is sleeping peacefully in the cradle.

• We are decorating the classroom for the annual day.

• He is writing an email to his manager.

• The students are discussing the project details.

Past Continuous Tense Examples

The past continuous tense is used to describe an action that was happening at a specific time in the past. The formula of the past continuous tense is: 

Subject + was/were + verb + -ing

Examples:

• She was reading when the phone rang.

• They were playing cricket in the evening.

• I was studying at 10 p.m. last night.

• The baby was crying loudly.

• We were travelling to Delhi during the holidays.

• He was cooking dinner when the guests arrived.

• The students were taking their exams.

Future Continuous Tense Examples

The future continuous tense is used to describe an action that will be happening at a specific time in the future. The formula of the future continuous tense is: 

Subject + will be + verb + -ing

Examples:

• They will be travelling to Mumbai next week.

• I will be attending the meeting at 5 p.m.

• He will be preparing for the interview tonight.

• We will be celebrating Diwali with our family.

• The students will be participating in the competition.
