Clothes are the fundamental part of our personality that we wear to cover our bodies. It originated around 5,00,000 years ago as a survival adaptation to protect the human body from cold and heat. Early man used to wear animal skin, leaves and grasses to survive harsh weather. The history of earliest woven and spinned clothes dates back to 34,000 years where natural fabrics were used to make the first clothes. Over the centuries humans have been knitting, weaving, spinning and stitching various kinds of clothes that hold a great cultural, traditional and seasonal significance. We wear clothes for various needs, occasions and seasons. Each of these types of clothes are explained in detail in the following sections.
Today clothes are made from both natural and synthetic fabrics. While natural fabrics are derived from plants and animals, synthetic clothes are man-made materials such as polyester, rayon, nylon and acrylic. Some natural fabrics derived from plants and animals are cotton, wool, lenin, silk and jute. Clothes made of natural fibre are comfortable and good for our environment as they are made with biodegradable material. The synthetic fabrics release microplastics into water when washed, polluting rivers and oceans. It is always better to choose natural fabrics over synthetic ones for our clothes. They are better for our health and for our environment.
We all need to wear appropriate clothes for a purpose or an occasion. Different types of clothes that we wear for different purposes are classified as:
Along with traditional significance, clothes also have a seasonal relevance. For example, we wear jackets and caps during winters but we wear raincoats and gum boots during monsoon. Different types of seasonal clothes based on climatic conditions and factors such as heat, cold or rain are classified as:
