What is Communication?

  • Communication is the exchange of words, information, gesture, or emotions between people.
  • It can take place using talking, listening, writing, reading, etc.

Modes of communication have evolved with time. Earlier communication to far-off places took a long time, but the situation is not the same at present.

Means of Communication Examples:

i) Letter:

  • A letter is a document with a message on it. It is the oldest means of communication.
  • Earlier letters took a long time to get delivered, but this changed after the development of postal services.
  • A letter is posted via the post office with a suitable stamp and address.
  • A message can be sent using an inland letter or a postcard.

 

ii) Telephones:

  • It is a device used for communication.
  • One can speak and listen while communicating through the telephone.
  • The telephone can be a piece of wired equipment, a cordless one, or a mobile phone.
  • A mobile phone allows seeing while communicating, whereas the other two do not.
 
iii) Office Fax Machine:
  • • It is a machine attached to the telephone connection that allows us to send a letter or photo, etc., to another person by dialling their number.
 
iv) E-mail:
  • It is a mode of communication that uses the internet.
  • We send and receive e-mails on our smartphones, computers, etc.
  • E-mails resemble a letter. But unlike a letter, we require an e-mail address, internet connection, and a computer or mobile phone to send it.

 

Types of Mass Communication:

  • The type of communication which involves more than two people at a time is called mass communication.
  • Mass communication can occur through audio-visual devices, magazines, newspapers, etc.

Applications of the Internet:

  • Internet stands for International Network that connects people worldwide with the help of computers.
  • Apart from communication, the internet is nowadays used for many purposes like—

 

Misuse of devices of communication:

  • The overuse of smartphones and laptops has restricted the growing kids indoors, hampering their physical development.
  • Mobiles games distract the children, so they cannot concentrate on their studies.
  • Unmonitored screen time leads to issues like fatigue, eyesight problems, headaches etc.
  • The Internet is flooded with a lot of information, some of which are wrong and inappropriate. Social media applications like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp expose children to improper facts.
  • Hence, there should be a check on every device used.
