Sphere: Definition and Equation
A sphere is a three-dimensional figure of which all points on its surface are equidistant from the center. The length of this distance is called radius and is denoted by 'r'. A sphere is a basic geometric shape while it occurs significantly naturally from the soap bubbles to the planets.
Surface Area (A): Surface area of a sphere is given by the formula :
where,
π is approximately 3.14.
Volume V: The volume of a sphere is defined by the formula:
Solved Example 1:
Surface Area of a Sphere Find the surface area of a sphere with radius 3 cm.
Solution:
1. Find the radius
2. Surface area equation
3. Compute
4. Substitute back in the equation
5. Round the answer
The surface area of the sphere is approximately 113.04 cm².
The properties of a sphere can be very important in many areas, from math to physics. These formulas about the surface and volume would make it possible for us to compute these characteristic values we mentioned before and consequently will help us make better use of our knowledge in real life. Relating to everyday objects or getting into complex scientific and technological concepts, the simple yet sublime geometry of the sphere has much to play.
