Addition of 4-Digit Numbers

Class 4Operations (Grade 4)

Addition of 4-digit numbers follows the same column method used for smaller numbers, but involves larger values and often requires regrouping (carrying over) from one place to the next.

In Class 4, you add numbers up to 9,999 and sometimes get a 5-digit sum. This skill is used for calculating totals, finding combined distances, and adding amounts of money.

What is Addition of 4-Digit Numbers - Class 4 Maths (Operations)?

Column addition is the standard method for adding 4-digit numbers:

  1. Write the numbers one below the other, aligning the place values (ones under ones, tens under tens, etc.).
  2. Add from right to left, starting with the ones column.
  3. If the sum of a column is 10 or more, write the ones digit and carry the tens digit to the next column.

Always add from right to left: Ones → Tens → Hundreds → Thousands

Key Points to Remember

  • Align numbers by place value before adding.
  • Add from right to left: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands.
  • If a column sum is 10 or more, write the ones digit and carry the tens digit.
  • The sum of two 4-digit numbers can be a 5-digit number (e.g., 7,856 + 3,478 = 11,334).
  • You can add three or more 4-digit numbers using the same method.
  • Use estimation to check if your answer is reasonable.
  • Addition is commutative: a + b = b + a (the order does not change the sum).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is regrouping in addition?

Regrouping (also called carrying) happens when the sum of digits in a column is 10 or more. You write the ones digit in that column and carry the tens digit to the next column on the left.

Q2. Can the sum of two 4-digit numbers be a 5-digit number?

Yes. For example, 9,999 + 1 = 10,000 (a 5-digit number). The maximum sum of two 4-digit numbers is 9,999 + 9,999 = 19,998.

Q3. Why do we add from right to left?

We start from the ones place because any carry from the ones affects the tens, carry from tens affects hundreds, and so on. Starting from the right ensures all carries are handled correctly.

Q4. How do you add numbers with different numbers of digits?

Align them by place value. Missing places in the shorter number are treated as 0. For example, to add 452 + 3,567, treat 452 as 0,452 and add normally.

Q5. What is the commutative property of addition?

It means the order of numbers does not change the sum. 3,456 + 2,789 = 2,789 + 3,456. This is useful for checking answers by swapping the numbers.

Q6. How can I check my addition answer?

Use estimation (round and add) or subtraction (subtract one addend from the sum to get the other). For example, if 4,567 + 2,815 = 7,382, check: 7,382 - 2,815 should give 4,567.

Q7. What is the maximum carry from a column?

When adding two numbers, the maximum carry is 1 (since 9 + 9 + 1 = 19, where 1 is the previous carry). When adding three numbers, the carry can be 2 (9 + 9 + 9 = 27).

Q8. Is addition of 4-digit numbers in the NCERT Class 4 syllabus?

Yes. NCERT Class 4 Maths covers addition of 4-digit and 5-digit numbers with and without regrouping in the operations chapter.
