Addition With Carrying (Regrouping)

Class 2Addition (Grade 2)

Addition with carrying happens when the ones digits add up to 10 or more. We cannot write a 2-digit number in the ones column, so we carry (regroup) the extra ten to the tens column.

This is also called addition with regrouping. It is one of the most important skills in Class 2 Maths.

What is Addition With Carrying (Regrouping) - Class 2 Maths (Addition (Grade 2))?

Carrying means moving 1 ten from the ones column to the tens column when the ones add up to 10 or more.

Steps:

  1. Add the ones digits.
  2. If the sum is 10 or more, write the ones digit of the sum below and carry 1 to the tens column.
  3. Add the tens digits plus the carry.

Example: 36 + 47

TensOnes
Carry1
36
+47
83

Ones: 6 + 7 = 13 → write 3, carry 1. Tens: 3 + 4 + 1 = 8. Answer: 83.

Solved Examples

Example 1: Example 1: Add 28 + 35

Question: Find 28 + 35.

Think:

  • Ones: 8 + 5 = 13 → write 3, carry 1
  • Tens: 2 + 3 + 1 = 6

Answer: 28 + 35 = 63.

Example 2: Example 2: Add 49 + 24

Question: Find 49 + 24.

Think:

  • Ones: 9 + 4 = 13 → write 3, carry 1
  • Tens: 4 + 2 + 1 = 7

Answer: 49 + 24 = 73.

Example 3: Example 3: Priya’s tiffin box

Question: Priya packed 17 grapes and 25 blueberries in her tiffin box. How many fruits in total?

Think:

  • 17 + 25
  • Ones: 7 + 5 = 12 → write 2, carry 1
  • Tens: 1 + 2 + 1 = 4

Answer: Priya has 42 fruits in her tiffin box.

Example 4: Example 4: Add 56 + 37

Question: What is 56 + 37?

Think:

  • Ones: 6 + 7 = 13 → write 3, carry 1
  • Tens: 5 + 3 + 1 = 9

Answer: 56 + 37 = 93.

Example 5: Example 5: Add 78 + 15

Question: Find 78 + 15.

Think:

  • Ones: 8 + 5 = 13 → write 3, carry 1
  • Tens: 7 + 1 + 1 = 9

Answer: 78 + 15 = 93.

Example 6: Example 6: Sum exceeds 99

Question: Add 86 + 29.

Think:

  • Ones: 6 + 9 = 15 → write 5, carry 1
  • Tens: 8 + 2 + 1 = 11 → write 1 in tens, carry 1 to hundreds
  • The answer is a 3-digit number: 115

Answer: 86 + 29 = 115.

Example 7: Example 7: Arjun’s savings

Question: Arjun saved ₹46 in January and ₹38 in February. How much did he save in all?

Think:

  • 46 + 38
  • Ones: 6 + 8 = 14 → write 4, carry 1
  • Tens: 4 + 3 + 1 = 8

Answer: Arjun saved ₹84 in all.

Key Points to Remember

  • Carry when the ones digits add up to 10 or more.
  • Write the ones digit of the sum in the ones column and carry the tens digit to the tens column.
  • Do not forget to add the carry when you add the tens column.
  • The sum of two 2-digit numbers can be a 3-digit number (e.g., 86 + 29 = 115).
  • Practice helps: the more you carry, the easier it gets.

Practice Problems

  1. Add 37 + 46.
  2. Find 59 + 28.
  3. Aditi has 48 red beads and 35 yellow beads. How many beads in total?
  4. What is 67 + 25?
  5. Add 79 + 14.
  6. Meera spent ₹55 on a book and ₹39 on colours. How much did she spend?

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What does carrying mean in addition?

Carrying means moving 1 ten from the ones column to the tens column. It happens when the ones add up to 10 or more. For example, 8 + 5 = 13, so you write 3 and carry 1.

Q2. What is regrouping?

Regrouping is another word for carrying. When 13 ones are regrouped, they become 1 ten and 3 ones. The 1 ten is moved to the tens column.

Q3. What if the tens also add up to more than 9?

Then you carry again from the tens to the hundreds place. For example, 85 + 67: ones give 12 (carry 1), tens give 8 + 6 + 1 = 15 (carry 1 to hundreds). Answer: 152.

Q4. How do I avoid mistakes while carrying?

Write the carry digit small above the tens column so you do not forget it. After adding the tens, cross it out so you know you used it.

Q5. Is carrying used in subtraction too?

In subtraction, the similar process is called borrowing (or regrouping). Instead of carrying forward, you borrow from the tens column to the ones column.

Q6. Can I check my answer?

Yes. Subtract one number from the answer. If 28 + 35 = 63, then 63 − 35 should be 28. If it matches, your answer is correct.
