Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What are number names?

Number names are the words used to write numbers. For example, 7 is "seven" and 56 is "fifty-six."

Q2. How do I write number names for numbers 21 to 99?

Use the tens word first, then a hyphen, then the ones word. Example: 43 = forty-three. If the ones digit is 0, just use the tens word alone: 80 = eighty.

Q3. Why is 40 spelled forty and not fourty?

This is a common English spelling exception. The word "forty" drops the "u" from "four." Children must memorise this.

Q4. What is the number name for 100?

100 is written as "one hundred." It means 10 groups of 10 or 1 group of 100.

Q5. Why are 11 to 19 different from other numbers?

Numbers 11 to 19 have special names (eleven, twelve, thirteen...) that do not follow the tens-ones pattern. They must be memorised separately.

Q6. Do I need a hyphen in number names?

Yes, for two-word number names from 21 to 99, use a hyphen: twenty-one, thirty-five, ninety-nine. Single-word names like ten, eleven, or twenty do not need a hyphen.
