You must have seen rainwater flowing off a farm and running into a nearby drain or river. That water usually carries soil, fertilizers and pesticides along with it. This whole process is called agricultural runoff. In easy words, it means the water that flows away from farms after rain or watering the crops and takes farm chemicals and loose soil along with it. Instead of soaking into the soil where crops can use it, the water flows into nearby rivers, lakes and ponds. By the time it gets to a river or pond, it is no longer clean water. All of this, mixed with fertilizers, pesticides, animal waste and soil, changes the water it flows into.

Farms need water, fertilizers and pesticides to grow crops. However, not everything stays where it’s put. When it rains, or when fields are watered too much, some of this water doesn’t soak into the ground; it runs off instead. This runoff picks up loose soil, leftover chemicals and sometimes animal waste on its way and carries all of it into nearby ditches, streams, ponds or rivers. This is what people call agricultural runoff. It happens on almost every farm at some point, but how much runoff occurs and how much damage it does depends a lot on the farming methods used and the land itself.
Several everyday farming habits and natural conditions work together to cause runoff. Let’s look at the most common ones below.
Overuse of Fertilizers and Pesticides
Farmers use fertilizers to keep insects away and fertilizers to help crops grow right. On the other hand, pesticides and fertilizers that are applied in excess of what crops require stay on the soil’s surface. Rainwater washes these excess chemicals away.
Heavy Rainfall and Poor Drainage
If it rains very hard, the soil can’t drink the water fast enough. Instead, water runs off the surface of the soil, gathering whatever is lying around and taking it downhill to drains and rivers.

Farms that are right next to a river or lake, or built on a slope, don’t give the runoff enough time or space to settle. It reaches the water almost immediately.

The runoff mixes chemicals and waste and dirties the rivers, lakes and ponds and makes them unsafe to use for people and animals.
Algal Blooms
Fertilizers contain nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. When a lot of this gets into water, algae begin to grow very fast and cover the whole surface. This blocks the sunlight reaching the plants that grow underneath the water.
Loss of Oxygen in Water (Dead zones)
When this extra algae dies, it breaks down, using up a lot of the oxygen in the water. Fish and other aquatic animals struggle to survive when oxygen levels become too low.
Harm to Aquatic Life
Runoff can transport pesticides into the water, causing harm to fish, frogs and other creatures living there and this disrupts the whole food chain in that water body.
Soil Degradation
Runoff keeps washing away the topsoil, the most fertile part of the land. With time this makes it harder for the farm to grow good crops.
Health Risks
Use of polluted water for drinking and bathing may cause health problems for human beings and livestock.

Using Fertilizers and Pesticides Wisely
Testing the soil helps farmers understand exactly what nutrients are needed, reducing unnecessary use of fertilizers and pesticides.
Planting Buffer Strips
Grow grass, small plants, or trees between the farm and nearby rivers or ponds. This helps catch soil and chemicals before they reach the water.
Crop Rotation and Cover Crops
Changing crops every season, or planting something even when the field is resting, helps keep soil from washing away.
Contour Farming
Ploughing along the natural slopes of the land, instead of straight lines, slows down water and stops soil from being carried off.
