A drought happens when it doesn’t rain in a place for a long time. Because of this, there isn’t enough water left for people, animals and plants to use. Drought resilience simply means being able to face a drought without too much trouble. We can’t stop a drought from happening because we cannot control when or how much it rains. But we can get ready for it, so that when it does come, we don’t suffer as much.
A drought-resilient area is one where people save water, grow suitable crops and protect the soil and trees. Farmers, students and people living in cities all have a part to play here. Since rain patterns are changing these days, it’s a good idea for students to understand what drought resilience really means and why it matters.

There are a few reasons why droughts keep happening and why they hurt so much:
Soil becomes weak and loses its fertility because of overfarming, soil erosion and poor farming practices. Weak soil can’t hold water well, so it dries up quickly when there’s a drought.
Good, fertile land slowly turns into a desert because trees are cut down, animals graze too much on it, or farming isn’t done properly. Once this happens, growing crops on that land becomes very difficult.
Temperatures are rising and rain has become harder to predict, which is making droughts happen more often and hit harder in India and elsewhere.
More people mean a greater demand for water and fewer trees mean the land holds less moisture. Put all this together and many places are becoming more prone to drought than before.
Here’s some good news though: even land that’s already damaged can be brought back to life if the right steps are taken and people put in some honest effort over time. The steps can be as follows:
Afforestation
Planting new trees helps hold the soil firmly in place and stops it from washing away during heavy rain or wind. Trees also pull water up from deep in the ground and release it slowly into the air, which helps bring back a healthy water cycle in that area over time.
Rainwater Harvesting
Instead of letting rainwater just run off the roads and roofs and go to waste during the monsoon season, it gets collected in tanks or pits and stored properly. This way, the water doesn’t disappear once the rains stop and it can be used later whenever it’s needed the most.
Check Dams and Ponds
Small check dams and ponds can be built across dry, low-lying areas to slow down the speed of flowing water after rain. This gives the water more time to soak into the ground instead of running away, which helps refill groundwater levels that people can rely on during dry months.
Watershed Management
The whole stretch of land that drains water into a nearby river or lake is looked after carefully, step by step, so that rain falling anywhere on it is put to good use. Trees, soil and small water bodies in that area are all managed together so nothing goes to waste.
Government and Local Efforts
Across India, many government schemes along with efforts by local communities have worked side by side to help villages that once struggled for water. Over the years, these combined efforts have helped several villages become more self-reliant, so they no longer depend so heavily on outside help for their water needs.
Farmers living in dry areas are now growing crops that don’t need much water to survive. Millets such as jowar, bajra and ragi are good examples, along with moong, groundnut and a few varieties of cotton. These crops can still produce a good harvest even with very little rainfall.
Saving water also helps a lot and one good way to do this is drip irrigation. In this method, water reaches the roots of plants drop by drop, so very little water is wasted. This works much better than the older method of flooding the whole field with water.
Conserving the land is equally important. Farming across slopes instead of up and down them, called contour farming and creating steps on hillsides, known as terracing, help prevent soil erosion and keep the soil healthy. Covering the soil with dry leaves or straw, a practice called mulching, helps the soil retain moisture for longer.
A drought occurs when an area receives very little or no rainfall for a long period. It can become more severe because of deforestation and poor land management.
Students can save water at home and at school, not waste it and talk to the people around them about the importance of saving water.
Millets such as jowar, bajra and ragi, along with crops like groundnut and moong, grow well because they require very little water.
Drought is a short-term event caused by lack of rain. Desertification is a slow process in which good land becomes desert forever.
