Picture graphs

  • Picture graph is a method to represent data using relevant images/symbols.
  • Picture graph is the simplest way to represent statistical data.
  • In the Picture graph, we use keys that are values of the images/symbol.
  • All symbols should be of the same size.

How to make a Picture graph?

Here it is explained in steps. An example is also given for reference.

Examples:

Here the list of the temperature of the five cities on 8th February 2022 is given below.

City Temperature
Bangalore 30°
Delhi 10°
Kolkata 20°
Mumbai 25°
Chennai 35°

Draw a picture graph representing the given data.

Answer:

Here the data is about temperature. There are two columns drawn. One is representing the cities and another is for the temperature. So, we use the image of the sun and cloud as a symbol. Each symbol represents 5° temperature.

Here is a picture graph drawn for the temperature of five different cities on 8th February 2022.

Another Way to Represent Picture graph

  • In vertical line represent the category and the horizontal line represent the data.
  • To represent the data use relevant symbols and assign key to denote the value of the symbols.

Examples:

Here the list of the temperature of the five cities on 8th February 2022 is given below.

Draw a picture graph representing the given data.

Answer:

City Temperature
Bangalore 30°
Delhi 10°
Kolkata 20°
Mumbai 25°
Chennai 35°

The picture graph of the above information is given below:

Advantages of Using Picture graph

  • Picture graphs are used to express information in the simplest manner.
  • It is easy to read as all the information is provided in one place.
  • It doesn’t require more explanation, as it is universally used.
  • It is very attractive also.

Disadvantages of Using Picture graph

  • Picture graph is not useful for larger data, especially when the numbers are in hundreds, thousands or more.
  • A picture graph is used for only the data in whole numbers.
  • Picture graph is not an accurate way to represent data.

Interpreting a Picture graph

  • Observe the category and the data related to the category.
  • Know the representation of the symbol and value of the symbol too.

Here it is explained with an example.

Example:

Here the picture graph drawn for the temperature of the five cities on 8th February 2022 is given below.

  1. What is the temperature of the Bangalore?
  2. What is the temperature difference of Kolkata and Chennai?

Answer:

From the pictograph it is clear that the symbol represents 5° temperatures.

    1. There are 6 symbols for Bangalore.

So, the temperature of Bangalore is:

      6 × 5° = 30°

    2. There are 4 symbols for Kolkata.

      So, the temperature of Kolkata is: 4 × 5° = 20°

There are 7 symbols for Chennai.

      Temperature of Chennai is: 7 × 5° = 35°

      So, the temperature difference is:

      35° – 20° = 15°
