Adding Zero
Zero means nothing. When we add zero to any number, the number does not change. This is called the zero property of addition.
Think of it this way: if you have 5 sweets and someone gives you 0 more, you still have 5 sweets!
What is Adding Zero - Class 1 Maths (Addition (Grade 1))?
The zero property of addition says:
Any number + 0 = That number
0 + Any number = That number
Adding zero means adding nothing. The sum stays the same as the other number.
Solved Examples
Example 1: 5 + 0
Question: What is 5 + 0?
Think:
- 5 things + nothing = still 5 things
Answer: 5 + 0 = 5.
Example 2: 0 + 7
Question: What is 0 + 7?
Think:
- Nothing + 7 things = 7 things
Answer: 0 + 7 = 7.
Example 3: Ria's Mangoes
Question: Ria has 8 mangoes. Her friend gives her 0 more. How many does she have?
Think:
- She started with 8
- She got 0 (nothing) more
- 8 + 0 = 8
Answer: Ria has 8 mangoes.
Example 4: 0 + 0
Question: What is 0 + 0?
Think:
- Nothing + nothing = nothing
Answer: 0 + 0 = 0.
Example 5: Empty Plate
Question: An empty plate has 0 biscuits. Aman puts 4 biscuits on it. How many now?
Think:
- 0 + 4 = 4
Answer: There are 4 biscuits on the plate.
Example 6: On the Number Line
Question: Show 6 + 0 on the number line.
Think:
- Start at 6
- Jump forward 0 times (no jumps)
- Stay at 6
0 — 1 — 2 — 3 — 4 — 5 — 6
Answer: 6 + 0 = 6. We do not move on the number line.
Example 7: Adding 0 to 10
Question: What is 10 + 0?
Think:
- 10 + nothing = 10
Answer: 10 + 0 = 10.
Key Points to Remember
- Adding 0 to any number gives the same number.
- This is called the zero property of addition (or identity property).
- It works both ways: 5 + 0 = 5 and 0 + 5 = 5.
- 0 + 0 = 0.
- On a number line, adding 0 means no jump — you stay where you are.
Practice Problems
- What is 9 + 0?
- What is 0 + 3?
- Priya has 6 pencils. She gets 0 more. How many pencils?
- True or false: 0 + 4 = 4.
- What is 0 + 0?
- Show 7 + 0 on a number line. Where do you stop?
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What happens when you add zero to a number?
The number stays the same. Adding zero means adding nothing, so nothing changes. For example, 8 + 0 = 8.
Q2. What is the zero property of addition?
It says that any number plus zero equals that same number. Example: 5 + 0 = 5 and 0 + 5 = 5.
Q3. Is 0 + 0 equal to 0?
Yes. Nothing plus nothing is still nothing. 0 + 0 = 0.
Q4. Does it matter if zero comes first or second?
No. 0 + 6 = 6 and 6 + 0 = 6. Both give the same answer.
Q5. Why is the zero property useful?
It helps you solve problems quickly. Whenever you see +0, you know the answer right away — it is just the other number.
Q6. Can I add zero to big numbers too?
Yes. The rule works for every number: 100 + 0 = 100, 50 + 0 = 50, 999 + 0 = 999.
