Doubles and Near Doubles

Class 1Addition (Grade 1)

A double is when we add a number to itself: 3 + 3, 4 + 4, 5 + 5. Doubles are easy to remember and very useful.

A near double is when the two numbers are just 1 apart: 3 + 4, 5 + 6. We can solve near doubles by using the double we already know.

What is Doubles and Near Doubles - Class 1 Maths (Addition (Grade 1))?

Doubles: Both addends are the same number.

DoubleSum
1 + 12
2 + 24
3 + 36
4 + 48
5 + 510
6 + 612
7 + 714
8 + 816
9 + 918
10 + 1020

Near doubles: One addend is 1 more than the other. Use the double and add 1.

Solved Examples

Example 1: Double of 4

Question: What is 4 + 4?

  • 5 and 6 are near doubles (6 is 1 more than 5)
  • Double 5 = 10
  • Add 1 more: 10 + 1 = 11

Answer: 5 + 6 = 11.

Example 4: Near Double: 7 + 8

Question: What is 7 + 8?

  • 7 and 8 are near doubles
  • Double 7 = 14
  • Add 1: 14 + 1 = 15

Answer: 7 + 8 = 15.

Example 5: Ria's Beads

Question: Ria has 3 red beads and 3 blue beads. How many beads in all?

Think:

  • 3 + 3 is a double
  • 3 + 3 = 6

Answer: Ria has 6 beads.

Example 6: Near Double: 4 + 5

Question: Aman has 4 toy cars. Kavi has 5 toy cars. How many cars together?

Example 7: Double of 9

Question: What is 9 + 9?

Think:

  • Double 9 = 18

Answer: 9 + 9 = 18.

Key Points to Remember

  • Doubles: same number + same number. The sum is always even.
  • Near doubles: two numbers that differ by 1. Use the double and add 1.
  • Doubles are easy to memorise: 1+1=2, 2+2=4, 3+3=6, ..., 10+10=20.
  • Near doubles trick: 6 + 7 = double 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13.
  • Doubles help us add faster without counting on fingers.

Practice Problems

  1. What is 5 + 5?
  2. What is 3 + 4? (Use near doubles)
  3. What is 8 + 8?
  4. Priya has 6 bangles on one hand and 7 on the other. How many bangles? (Near doubles)
  5. Find: 9 + 10 using the near doubles strategy.
  6. Write all doubles from 1+1 to 10+10.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is a double in addition?

A double is adding the same number to itself. Examples: 2+2=4, 5+5=10, 8+8=16.

Q2. What is a near double?

A near double is when the two numbers differ by 1, like 4+5 or 7+8. To solve, use the double of the smaller number and add 1.

Q3. Why are doubles useful?

Doubles are easy to remember. Once you know them, you can quickly solve near doubles too. They speed up addition.

Q4. Are all doubles even numbers?

Yes. When you add the same number to itself, the result is always even: 1+1=2, 3+3=6, 5+5=10.

Q5. How do I solve 6 + 7 using near doubles?

Think: double 6 = 12. Since 7 is 1 more than 6, add 1: 12 + 1 = 13. So 6 + 7 = 13.

Q6. What is the biggest double in Grade 1?

10 + 10 = 20. This is the largest double fact within 20.
