Halves (Grade 2)
Half means dividing something into 2 equal parts and taking one part. The word for half is written as 1/2 (one out of two equal parts).
In Class 2, you learn to find half of shapes, objects, and small numbers.
What is Halves (Grade 2) - Class 2 Maths (Fractions Introduction)?
When we divide something into 2 equal parts, each part is called a half. The fraction for half is written as:
1/2
The top number (1) means we take one part. The bottom number (2) means the whole is divided into two equal parts.
Important: The two parts must be equal. If the parts are not equal, they are not halves.
Halves (Grade 2) Formula
Half of a number = Number ÷ 2

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What is a half?
A half is one of two equal parts of a whole. It is written as the fraction 1/2.
Q2. How do you find half of a number?
Divide the number by 2. For example, half of 10 = 10 ÷ 2 = 5.
Q3. Can any shape be divided into halves?
Yes, any shape can be divided into halves as long as the two parts are exactly equal in size.
Q4. What is the connection between doubles and halves?
They are opposite operations. If double of 7 is 14, then half of 14 is 7.
Q5. Is half of an odd number a whole number?
No. Half of an odd number like 7 is 3.5, which is not a whole number. In Class 2, we mostly find halves of even numbers.
Q6. What does 1/2 mean?
The top number 1 means we take one part. The bottom number 2 means the whole is split into 2 equal parts. So 1/2 means one out of two equal parts.
Q7. If I cut a roti into 2 parts but they are not equal, is each piece a half?
No. For each piece to be called a half, both pieces must be the same size. Unequal parts are not halves.
