Subtracting Zero
When we subtract zero from any number, the number does not change. Taking away nothing leaves everything as it was.
This is an important rule: Any number − 0 = That number.
What is Subtracting Zero - Class 1 Maths (Subtraction (Grade 1))?
The zero property of subtraction says:
Any number − 0 = That number
Subtracting zero means taking away nothing. The starting number stays the same.
Solved Examples
Example 1: 7 − 0
Question: What is 7 − 0?
Think:
- Start with 7
- Take away 0 (nothing)
- All 7 remain
Answer: 7 − 0 = 7.
Example 2: 3 − 0
Question: What is 3 − 0?
Think:
- Take nothing from 3
- 3 stays
Answer: 3 − 0 = 3.
Example 3: Ria's Mangoes
Question: Ria has 9 mangoes. Nobody eats any. How many mangoes are left?
Think:
- None were eaten → take away 0
- 9 − 0 = 9
Answer: 9 mangoes are left.
Example 4: 0 − 0
Question: What is 0 − 0?
Think:
- Start with nothing, take away nothing
- Still nothing
Answer: 0 − 0 = 0.
Example 5: On the Number Line
Question: Show 5 − 0 on the number line.
Think:
- Start at 5
- Jump back 0 times → no jump
- Stay at 5
0 — 1 — 2 — 3 — 4 — 5
Answer: 5 − 0 = 5. No movement on the number line.
Example 6: 10 − 0
Question: What is 10 − 0?
Think:
- 10 minus nothing = 10
Answer: 10 − 0 = 10.
Example 7: Aman's Coins
Question: Aman has 6 coins. He does not spend any. How many coins does he have?
Think:
- He spent 0
- 6 − 0 = 6
Answer: Aman has 6 coins.
Key Points to Remember
- Subtracting 0 from any number gives the same number.
- This is the zero property of subtraction.
- On a number line, subtracting 0 means no jump backward.
- 0 − 0 = 0.
- Do not confuse with subtracting a number from itself: 5 − 5 = 0 (that IS different).
Practice Problems
- What is 8 − 0?
- What is 4 − 0?
- Priya has 10 stickers. She gives away 0. How many does she have?
- Show 9 − 0 on a number line.
- True or false: 6 − 0 = 0.
- What is 0 − 0?
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What happens when you subtract zero?
The number stays the same. Taking away nothing does not change anything. 8 − 0 = 8.
Q2. Is 5 − 0 the same as 0 − 5?
No. 5 − 0 = 5 (take nothing from 5). 0 − 5 is not possible in Grade 1 because you cannot take 5 from nothing.
Q3. Is 6 − 0 equal to 6 or 0?
6 − 0 = 6. Taking nothing away from 6 leaves all 6.
Q4. How is this different from adding zero?
Adding zero (5+0=5) and subtracting zero (5−0=5) both give the same number. Zero does not change anything in either operation.
Q5. What is 0 − 0?
0 − 0 = 0. Nothing minus nothing is still nothing.
Q6. Why is this rule useful?
It lets you answer quickly. Whenever you see −0, you know the answer is just the starting number.
