How to Use Past Tense on a Rainy Day at School?

A diary entry must be written in the past tense if the writer speaks about an incident that has already happened.

Example:

The space outside the classroom was filled with colourful wet umbrellas. I had also kept mine. I loved that sight. Fortunately, I sat by the window side of my classroom.
