In their own little ways, children can contribute toward a greener future

Diwali is just around the corner, and there cannot be a better time than this to encourage children to opt for organic and eco-friendly ways to celebrate the ‘festival of lights’. Every year, different parts of India, especially the national capital region, choke on air pollution. Toxic smoke released from firecrackers drives up pollution levels by a whopping 800%, while decorative string lights consume a lot of electricity.
Keeping alive the dream of a greener planet, we must adopt sustainable methods and environmentally-friendly products and materials to celebrate Deepawali with our loved ones. We have curated a list of ways to inspire your little ones to go green this Diwali!
Beej Pataka
Plantable seed crackers (or beej pataka) are slowly gaining popularity in India. Promising less smoke and noise, these eco-friendly alternatives come embedded with a variety of organic seeds wrapped in recycled paper, which can be grown into vegetables and flowers. Said to be handcrafted using clay by farmers and rural women, beej pataka looks a lot like the common anaar, chakri, sutli bomb and ladi, but these are claimed to be non-toxic and biodegradable.
Energy-efficient decorative lights
Staying true to the ethos of the festival of lights, almost every household puts up decorative lights during Diwali. Draping our doors, windows, balconies and patios, twinkling bulbs - available in the shape of stars, bells, cones and more - instantly brighten up our homes and lift our mood. This festive season, go green! Ditch those traditional incandescent bulbs for energy-efficient LED lights.
Clay diyas and candles
You can go a step forward and choose clay lamps, earthen diyas and candles, instead of spending on fancy string lights. These are not only warm and inviting, but also an interesting way to acquaint the little ones with our traditional practices. Additionally, these energy-conserving alternatives can help set a positive example for contributing toward a greener future.

Organic rangoli
Diwali celebrations are incomplete without those intricate colourful patterns adorning our homes. While we experiment a lot with designs every year, not much thought is put into whether or not those vibrant powder hues are made from chemical-free materials. You can also go for skin-safe colours made from natural sources like turmeric, cinnamon, beetroot, leafy vegetables, dried flower petals, fruit peels as well as rice.
Handmade gifts
What can be a better way to make your loved ones feel special than offering them handmade gifts during the festive season. Still struggling with gifting ideas? We have got you covered! Try customised hampers, scented candles, homemade sweets and chocolates, handpainted diyas, handcrafted jewellery and showpieces as well as upcycled decor items.
