Movies adapted from children’s literature have always piqued the interest of cinephiles and book lovers across age groups. Be it fantasy, drama, comedy or live-action animation, films have time and again brought alive our beloved childhood characters on the big screen, attracting not just the little ones but their parents too. 1. Paddington in Peru

Adapted from Michael Bond’s Paddington stories, which was first published in 1958, Paddington in Peru is a 2024 live-action animated adventure comedy film. Starring Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Olivia Colman, Antonio Banderas, this Dougal Wilson directorial is the third installment in the Paddington film series. Ben Whishaw lends his voice for Paddington in the movie.

2. Harold and the Purple Crayon

Helmed by Carlos Saldanha, Harold and the Purple Crayon is a 2024 fantasy comedy, based on Crockett Johnson’s 1955 book. Zachary Levi, Lil Rel Howery, Benjamin Bottani, Jemaine Clement, Tanya Reynolds, Alfred Molina and Zooey Deschanel feature as the movie’s lead cast.

3. Alice in Wonderland

Tim Burton’s 2010 Gothic dark fantasy adventure film Alice In Wonderland features Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Matt Lucas, Helena Bonham Carter, Crispin Glover, Frances de la Tour and Leo Bill in the lead. The movie is adapted from Lewis Carroll’s books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1871).

4. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Starring Johnny Depp and Freddie Highmore, director Tim Burton’s 2005 musical fantasy film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is inspired by Roald Dahl’s 1964 children’s novel of the same name. The cast also includes David Kelly, Helena Bonham Carter, Noah Taylor, Missi Pyle, James Fox, Deep Roy and Christopher Lee.

5. Matilda

Helmed by Danny DeVito, Matilda is a 1996 fantasy comedy film, with Mara Wilson appearing in the titular role. The movie - based on Roald Dahl’s 1988 novel of the same name - also features Danny, Rhea Perlman, Embeth Davidtz and Pam Ferris as supporting characters.
