Girls’ education is critical to shattering the glass ceiling

Admissions Open for 2026-27

The first step to women empowerment is ensuring that every girl child has access to quality education. In a country like India where female foeticide and gender bias continue to be an unabated crisis, girls’ education can become a powerful tool to bring about a real change. It’s an investment that is critical to shattering the glass ceiling, breaking cycles of poverty and ensuring that women live a better and healthier life with dignity. On a larger perspective, girls’ education can help transform the world by creating more equitable, stable and resilient communities.

Here are the key impacts of girls’ education:

1. Economic empowerment: Poverty, socio-cultural norms, violence and a lack of infrastructure and other facilities have often compelled girls to discontinue their education at an early age. This happens while we know that primary education can potentially help improve their future wages by as much as 10%-20%. So, the World Bank considers girls’ education a strategic development priority.

2. Mental and physical well-being: Educated women are more aware and informed about the importance of one’s physical and mental well-being. They prioritise nutrition and healthcare as well as have a better understanding of when they want to get married and have children. This, in turn, keeps the risk of child marriage and high mortality rates in check. One’s academic journey is also critically linked to self-esteem, resilience, overall well-being and future opportunities.

3. Stronger society and community: Educated girls can actively contribute to building stronger and peaceful societies, while also positively engaging communities in nation-building, sustainable development and better overall outcomes. Empowering women is believed to help cut the risk of war, foster resilience to climate change, lift people out of poverty and ensure access to education and basic services.

4. Better decision-making skills: The most effective way to ensure that young minds have a moral compass and are skilled in making smart decisions is by giving them access to quality education. Well-informed girls are better at critical thinking and emotional regulation. They are ambitious, understand their priorities and have the courage to take responsibility. This makes them better equipped in household and community decision-making.

5. Digital and inclusive learning: According to UNICEF data, a whopping 119 million girls are out of school globally. This number raises serious concerns over gender equality in education, violence against women as well as their lifetime earnings. By investing in girls’ education (particularly primary and secondary), we can ensure that they develop the knowledge and skills they need for their personal and professional life. Digital technologies can have a transformative impact on girls’ education. These can help close gender gaps as well as provide personalised education for students, irrespective of their background or abilities.
