Believe it or not, the Periodic Table has more drama than a reality show. Here’s proof!

Exploring the science behind every element in the Periodic Table

Admissions Open for 2026-27

Welcome to the world of the Periodic Table. It’s like a big, fat family photo of 118 elements, each of which comes with their own personality, mood and ‘strange’ habits. For instance, if chemistry had an Instagram page, this table would already have the blue tick mark. On the other hand, hydrogen seems to be more comfortable at the top. The noble gases are kinda asocial, while sodium constantly chases after chlorine, since they presumably work ‘better together’.

So, what actually goes on in the periodic table? (non-boring responses only!)

Imagine a super-organised party where every guest is arranged by:

  • How heavy they are (atom weight)

  • How many electrons they have

  • How dramatic they can be in their reactions

That cool chart, ladies and gentlemen, is the periodic table. Frankly speaking, it’s not just a chart - it’s chemistry’s gossip map!

A bit of digging up in Google will show you that Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev’s 1869 periodic table was the first one to find acceptance among scientists. Apparently, his periodic law was formulated as ‘a dependence of chemical properties on atomic mass’. It is said that before Dmitri, scientists were trying to organise the elements like someone trying to sort 118 pairs of socks. In a nutshell, it was chaotic.

Then came Dmitri. He looked at all the elements and said: “Hmm… This looks messy. Let me clean up.” He arranged the elements neatly, left blank spaces for those that didn’t even exist yet and basically became the Marie Kondo of chemistry. Needless to say, his period table sparked joy, curiosity and a sense of symmetry.

Let’s decode the ‘seating arrangement’ of the periodic table…

1. Periods - the horizontal roommates

  • These are the rows.
Same row = same number of electron shells = similar vibes.

2. Groups - same family, same attitude. Ting!

Vertical columns. Members of each group behave alike - like siblings who copy each other’s style.

  • Group 1: Extremely reactive. The kids your teacher sat away from the bunsen burner.

  • Group 18: Noble gases - too cool and stable. No reaction to anything. Really!

3. Blocks - the housing societies

  • S Block: Simple, does the job.

  • P Block: The diverse, creative neighborhood.

  • D Block: The transition metals - the overachievers.

  • F Block: The mysterious basement dwellers (rare earth and radioactive)

Periodic Table

Time to say hello to the periodic table characters

  • Hydrogen (H): The lightest, brightest and tiniest star of the show, hydrogen wants to bond with everyone. Slightly clingy.

  • Sodium (Na): Way too friendly, put sodium in water and it’ll probably throw a mini firework party.

  • Chlorine (Cl): Chlorine smells weird, might even sting your eyes. But it pairs perfectly with sodium - much like cheese + pizza.

  • Helium (He): Ever tried inhaling helium? It may temporarily turn your voice squeaky [be cautious, as excessive inhalation of helium may be harmful]. Refusing to react with anyone, helium is notorious for floating away from responsibilities.

  • Gold (Au): Rich, shiny yet no drama, gold is the periodic table’s luxury influencer.

  • Oxygen (O): The most popular kid on the block, oxygen is the one thing literally everyone needs.

Now, meet the quirky squad of the periodic table

  • Noble gases: The silent introverts

  • Alkali metals: ‘Let’s react and explode right now!’

  • Lanthanides: Everyone forgets they exist, until they’re needed.

  • Mercury: The only metal that can’t sit still (coz, it’s liquid).

Why should you even care about all the drama that unfolds on the periodic table?

Because…

  • Your phone battery? Periodic table.

  • Your water? Periodic table.

  • The air you breathe? Periodic table.

  • The salt on your French fries? Yes, periodic table.

Basically, the entire universe is one big periodic party. Phew!

All you need to know about the science concepts

And there’s more. Here’re some more fun facts worth mugging up on

  • Hydrogen is so light it can escape earth, same as some of us want to escape responsibilities.

  • Neon signs aren’t always neon. They use other gases too.

  • Gold doesn’t rust, because it’s too classy for that!
