Moving from simple aquatic plants to early land plants, bryophytes represent the first stage of plant adaptation to life on land. They are called the amphibians of the plant kingdom because they grow on land but need water for reproduction.
They do not have vascular tissues and possess root-like structures called rhizoids instead of true roots.
Characteristics of Bryophytes
Examples of Bryophytes: Moss, liverwort, riccia, and marchantia are examples of bryophytes.
Bryophytes help retain soil moisture and prevent soil erosion.
With further adaptation to land, plants developed transport tissues for carrying water and nutrients. This advancement led to the development of pteridophytes, the first vascular plants.
They have true roots, stems, and leaves but reproduce through spores instead of seeds.

Examples of Pteridophytes: Fern, horsetail, and selaginella are examples of pteridophytes.
As plants evolved further, they developed seeds for reproduction. Gymnosperms were the first seed-producing plants, providing better protection to the developing plant.
Their seeds remain exposed on cone-like structures, which is why they are called naked seed plants.
