Inclusive education is a key tenet of sustainable growth for a nation

According to the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, which stems from Article 21A of the Constitution of India, children aged between 6 and 14 years have the fundamental right to free and compulsory education. The primary goal of this Act is to ensure universal access and quality elementary education for all kids. At this point, it’s also crucial to note the importance of inclusive education in the country.

Inclusive education fosters equal opportunity, active participation, a sense of belonging and empathy among young people, while also preventing social stigma, discrimination, and barriers to learning. It ensures that every child - irrespective of economic background, social status and disability - has access to a congenial atmosphere to develop vital life skills as well as build confidence and academic potential - in tandem with India’s democratic values and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 goals. Inclusive education is a key tenet of sustainable growth for a nation, especially as we foray into an AI-driven future. It ensures that young people from different milieus learn and grow side by side. However, for such a system to work, changes are required at all levels of society.

While teachers must be duly trained, school infrastructure and education quality must improve so that learning materials and other amenities are equally accessible to every student on campus. On the other hand, communities must rise to foster individual well-being and drive a positive change. Governments and local authorities, on the other hand, must revamp laws and align policies to analyse data to create better environments for students that help build compassionate teacher-student relationships and foster social-emotional learning, while also promoting physical and psychological safety in diverse settings.

Inclusive education is at the core of Orchids The International School’s curriculum and pedagogy. Even amid a collective learning environment, every child’s needs and pace are factored in. Instead of seeing it as an end goal, we believe that inclusive education is a continuous process of innovating and improving the culture of schooling.
