Make this Holi a fun learning moment for your kids
Admissions Open for 2026-27
Holi is one of those festivals that children wait for all year long. The colours, laughter, sweets, togetherness and freedom to get a little messy make it extra special. While fun and frolic take precedence during the festival of colours, it can also quietly become a beautiful learning moment at home for the little ones. Not the kind that feels like schoolwork, but the kind that happens naturally through play.
With a few simple ingredients from your kitchen and a little guidance, you can turn Holi 2026 into a day of fun experiments that spark curiosity and conversation. The best part is that children learn without even realising it. Here are five easy and colourful science activities you can try right in your own space this Holi.
1. Rainbow Walking Water
Take a few glasses and place them in a line. Fill alternate glasses with coloured water and leave the others empty. Now connect each glass with a folded paper towel and simply wait. Slowly, the coloured water begins to travel into the empty glasses and mix, forming new shades.
Kids love watching this slow transformation. Along the way, it helps explain how plants absorb water and how these shades combine to create new ones. It also teaches patience, as they wait and observe the change happening in front of them.

2. Homemade Natural Holi Colours
Instead of buying ready-made colours from the market, spend some time making them together. Turmeric can be used for yellow, beetroot for pink, spinach for green and dried hibiscus petals for red. Grinding, mixing and preparing these natural pigments can itself become an engaging activity.
While doing this, you can gently talk about why natural colours are safer for the skin and better for the environment. Children begin to understand that celebrations can be both fun and responsible.
3. Magic Milk Colour Swirl
Pour some milk into a shallow plate and add a few drops of food colouring. Dip a cotton bud in liquid soap and touch the surface of the milk. Instantly, the colours start moving and spreading in beautiful patterns.
The excitement on a child’s face during this moment is priceless. It is an easy way to explain how soap reacts with certain elements in milk. But more importantly, it encourages them to ask questions and think about what they are seeing.

4. Fizzy Colour Reaction
Mix baking soda with a little food colour in small cups. Slowly pour vinegar into each one and watch the mixture bubble and fizz. The reaction is quick, colourful and always brings giggles.
This activity introduces children to basic chemical reactions in a way that feels playful rather than complicated. They see cause and effect right in front of them.
5. Secret Invisible Messages
Let children write hidden Holi 2026 wishes using lemon juice and a cotton bud on plain paper. After it dries, gently warm the sheet under a lamp with adult supervision. Slowly, the message appears.
This quick trick feels like magic to children. It naturally leads to conversations about how heat can bring about changes, while also adding a surprise element to the celebration.
Sometimes, the most meaningful learning does not happen at a desk. It happens in the kitchen, around the dining table, with festive shades on your hands and laughter in the air.
