Think about a park near your house. You’ll find trees standing tall, birds chirping, tiny insects moving around, soil under your feet, sunlight falling everywhere and maybe even a small pond with some fish in it. None of these things are placed there on purpose, yet they all live together in the same space and depend on one another. This is what we call an ecosystem.
In simple words, an ecosystem is where living and non-living things live together and depend on each other for survival. To understand it better, we usually break it down into two parts. One part is alive and we call that biotic. The other part is not alive and we call that abiotic.

Biotic simply means living. So anything that breathes, grows, or reproduces falls under this group. This includes plants, animals, birds, insects, fish, bacteria and fungi. These living things get their food in different ways, so we usually place them into three groups.
Producers
These are plants. Plants can make their own food using sunlight, water and air. This is something that plants can do and because of this, almost every other living thing depends on them, directly or indirectly, for food.
Consumers
These are animals. Animals cannot make their own food, so they eat something else to survive. Cows and deer are animals that eat only plants. Some eat only other animals, like lions and tigers. Some, like humans, bears and crows, eat both.
Decomposers
Bacteria and fungi are nature's cleanup workers. When a plant or an animal dies, these little creatures slowly break it down and change it into simple substances which go back into the soil. This might not sound exciting, but it is one of the most important jobs in nature; without them, dead leaves and animals would just keep piling up everywhere and the soil would never get its nutrients back.
Abiotic means not alive. This includes things like sunlight, air, water, soil and temperature. These things don't grow or breathe, but every living thing depends on them to survive. Take water, for example. A fish cannot live without it and neither can most plants. Or take sunlight. Plants need it to make their food and without that food, the rest of the ecosystem would slowly fall apart too. These non-living things can also be grouped based on what kind of effect they have.
Climatic factors
These are things like sunlight, temperature, wind and humidity. They determine how hot or cold a place is, how much rain it receives and how living things grow and behave there.
Edaphic factors
They are linked to the soil, such as its fertility, water retention and nutrient content. Healthy soil supports more plants and more plants provide food and shelter for many animals.
Topographic factors
These are about the land itself, for example, whether it is flat, hilly, high up or near sea level. The shape and height of the land can change the weather and the type of life found in that area.
Together, the type of soil, the amount of rainfall and the temperature of a place decide what kind of plants and animals can live there. That’s why you will never find a polar bear in a desert or a cactus growing in a rainforest. Nature simply doesn’t allow it, because the surroundings are not right for them.
Living and non-living components are closely connected and work together in one continuous cycle. Plants need sunlight, air and water to grow. Animals need plants to eat and oxygen to breathe. Further, when plants and animals die, bacteria and fungi break them down and the nutrients go back into the soil to help new plants grow.
If you remove even one part of this cycle, everything else gets affected. Suppose there is very little rain in an area for a long time. Plants won’t grow properly. That means animals who eat plants will have less food. The animals that feed on those plant-eating animals will also struggle. Even one missing piece can throw the whole system out of balance.
When you cut down trees or pollute rivers or destroy soil, you’re not just hurting one thing. You’re messing with the whole balance that keeps an ecosystem alive. Thus, it is important to take care of nature. When students understand how everything is connected, they are more likely to care about the environment.
