What is Matter

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. All matter, whether living or non-living, is composed of matter. You are made of matter . So is the chair you sit on . So is the air you breathe , the water you drink and even your body .

Scientists have discovered that matter is made up of extremely tiny particles. Depending on how these particles are arranged and combined, matter can exist in different forms.

Matter may be:

  • A pure substance made of only one type of particle.
  • A mixture containing two or more different substances.

It helps us identify the properties and behaviour of different materials in daily life.

What are Mixtures

A mixture is a physical combination of two or more substances that are mixed together without undergoing any chemical reaction. Each substance in the mixture retains its own properties and can usually be separated using physical methods.

Unlike compounds, the components of a mixture are not chemically bonded. They simply exist together in varying proportions.For example, when sugar is added to water, the sugar dissolves, but both sugar and water retain their individual chemical identities.

Uniform and Non-uniform Mixtures

Uniform Mixtures (Homogeneous Mixtures)

The individual components cannot be distinguished with the naked eye.

Non-uniform Mixtures (Heterogeneous Mixtures)

A non-uniform mixture has an uneven distribution of components. Different substances remain visible and can often be separated easily.

Examples: oil and water, sand in water, soil,fruit salad and granite

What are Elements
