Measurement is an essential part of our daily lives, helping us understand quantities like length, weight, and time in a clear and standard way. From buying groceries to cooking food or traveling distances, measurement plays a crucial role everywhere.
It helps ensure accuracy, consistency, and fairness in everyday activities as well as in scientific observations. This article mainly focuses on the main concept of measurement, physical quantities, units of measurement, and the need for standard units.
In our daily lives, we make measurements for just about everything. For example, we measure the ingredients required to bake a cake, items at the grocery store like milk, oil, cereals, etc., distance travelled, length of a piece of cloth, time required to complete a task, etc.
This means we measure weight, length, temperature, time, etc. These quantities are called physical quantities. Thus, a quantity that can be measured and expressed in numbers is called a physical quantity.
To understand measurements better, we need to know about units.
|
“When we measure an unknown physical quantity, we do so by comparing it with some known quantity. This known quantity is called the unit of measurement.” |
Thus, in order to measure any physical quantity, we need to know:
• the value that represents the number of units contained in that quantity and
• the unit of measurement
Thus, measurement is the process of comparing the physical quantity to be measured with a standard unit of measurement of that quantity.
For example, when we have to get the covers of our sofa changed, the shopkeeper measures the cloth by using a device called a ‘metre rod’. Similarly, when we go to a tailor to get a costume stitched, he or she takes our measurements using a measuring tape.
The measurements, thus taken, should be accurate for the clothes to fit. Even while making a dish or baking a cake, the measurement of each ingredient plays a vital role in enhancing the taste of these dishes. Thus, you see that measurement is of great importance to all of us.
Finally, let’s understand why standard units of measurement became necessary.
In earlier times, people used different body parts to measure length.
The length of an object was measured by using handspan, cubit (arm length), footstep (called pace), foot, and fathom (length of the outstretched arms).
Handspan, cubit, footsteps, and other units based on the length of body parts are not accurate and reliable. They cannot be used as the length of the body parts varies from person to person. Therefore, people felt the need for standard units of measurement.
And so far, we’ve seen that measurement plays a vital role in our everyday life by helping us compare and understand different physical quantities accurately. It allows us to perform daily activities with precision and ensures consistency in results.
Measurement is the process of comparing a physical quantity with a standard unit of measurement.
A physical quantity is a quantity that can be measured and expressed in numbers, such as length, weight, or time.
A unit of measurement is a known quantity used as a standard to measure other quantities.
No, measurement cannot be done properly without units because units provide a standard for comparison.
Examples include measuring ingredients for cooking, measuring cloth, calculating distance travelled, and measuring time.
Inaccurate measurements can lead to improper results, such as ill-fitting clothes or poorly prepared food.
