The magnitude of a force is the strength of the force acting on an object. It depends upon the number of forces involved in a particular action.
When two or more forces act in the same direction, then the magnitude of the force on the object is the sum of the forces. When two or more forces act in the opposite direction, then the magnitude of the force on the object will be the difference of the forces.
If the magnitude of force on an object changes, the effects of the force will also change. For example, if we apply a small force to an inflated balloon, it will get deformed. But if we keep increasing the magnitude of force, at a certain force, the balloon will burst.
If two boys are applying force on a box in the same direction, it will add up, and the total force will increase. If the two boys are pushing the same block but in opposite directions with equal force, then the forces cancel each other, and the body remains stationary.
Force depends on both magnitude and direction, hence it is a vector quantity. Forces that are equal in size but opposite in direction are called balanced forces. Thus, the net resultant force acting on a body is equal to zero. Balanced forces do not cause a change in the state of motion of objects.
Forces that cause a change in the state of motion of objects are called unbalanced forces. They are unequal in magnitude. Their direction can be the same or different, but the net resultant force acting on a body will have a particular direction and magnitude.
