Atomicity is the total number of atoms present in the molecule of an element. A molecule may be made up of one or more atoms. Based on their atomicity, elements are termed as monoatomic, diatomic, triatomic and polyatomic.
Elements such as helium, neon, and sodium contain only one atom in their molecules. Such molecules, which consist of one atom of an element, are called monoatomic molecules. Elements like hydrogen, oxygen (O₂), chlorine (Cl₂) and nitrogen (N₂) contain two atoms of the same type in their molecules. Such molecules, which consist of two atoms of an element, are called diatomic molecules. Oxygen in the form of ozone (O₃) contains three atoms in its molecule. Such molecules, which consist of three atoms of an element, are called triatomic molecules. Elements like phosphorus (P₄) and sulphur (S₈) contain more than three atoms in their molecules. Such molecules, which consist of more than three atoms, are called polyatomic molecules.
